Pick a neutral paint scheme
Neutral paints are a key part of Farmhouse decor. Luckily paint is a relatively cheap fix when it comes to home decor.
Most farmhouse themes rely heavily on whites, beige, grays and our neutral hues. Think Rustic tones
add Neutral furniture
Add furniture to you area that is neutral. I love leather couches and simple wooden pieces with clean lines.
Can’t afford new furniture? Consider chalk painting and distressing a piece you already have. Or find a new piece at thrift store to spruce up. Maybe add a neutral slip cover to an old couch or replace a chair cushion. Add throw pillows for a pop of color.
Pick colored accessories to brighten your space just a tad
Add accessories that benefit the space. Consider live plants and flowers. Pillows, blankets, candles or other useful items. Accessories with hues that are dark green, blues and grays are great options.
Add something rustic and charming
Looking for something rustic and charming. Consider going to a local thrift store or flea market.
I have found some of my favorite pieces in thrift stores. Recently we picked up some crystal candle sticks that were Mikasa for about $2 each. They are beautiful. I love them.
Maybe I’m biased. I guess my love for thrift stores started as a young child for me. My great grandma and I would go yard sale hopping every weekend. I loved to find all kinds of treasures. The hunt for goodies still reminds me of those childhood days with her. She was such an amazing lady.
If something older isn’t really your style there are lots of new items taht look rustic now a days too. Check out Etsy or Amazon’s handmade section. They have some great custom finds that are for sure charming to say the least.
add different textures
Consider adding different textures to the area for a warmer home feel. I like to add knitted blankets and velvet pillows. They add a since of comfort and are easy on the eye while adding a little something extra to the room.
add wired or metal accessories
Wired baskets are a super easy way to add a farmhouse feel to any room. Galvanized steal monogrammed letters are a nice touch as well. Farmhouse decor really embraces metal along with other natural rustic elements. Maybe even consider adding metal numbers to your decor.
add crown molding
Crown molding can be a bit of a bigger project, but it can add a ton of detail to any room, giving it instant charm
rustic faux wood floors and throw rugs
Now flooring can get pretty pricey, but we are currently added rustic vinyl faux wood floors to our home. They are waterproof and amazing. More to come on this soon.
If changing out the floors is not an option consider a throw rug to change up the space.
add a ladder for additional storage
Ladders(wooden ones preferably) can add a ton of unexpected storage space. Hang one from the ceiling to add a place for hanging plants or lights.
Stand a ladder against a wall and hang blankets on it for a cute look with convenience in mind.
Shiplap has really become a growing trend.
Shiplap is thicker horizontal boards that run up and down a wall. It is a classic farmhouse decor look as Shiplap was a classic way to create interior walls before walls were plastered/sheet rocked back in the day.
If traditional shiplap is not in the cards maybe faux shiplap wallpaper or peel and stick paper maybe the right choice for you.
Our laundry room has a strip of the faux shiplap above our wash and dryer. I really wanted the shiplap look in there.
However, I couldn’t use traditional shiplap in the laundry room as there are water valves in the way. The faux peel and stick paper was amazing and super easy to use. Looks great and is lasting really well. Plus it only took one roll which was less then $25.
Think outside the box
Farmhouse decor is a little bit eclectic. Meaning it has a little bit of everything. Consider adding randomness. Here are some more items to consider
