Supplies needed for DIY Twine heart
Piece of Cardboard
Twine (preferably a roll of twine)
Rhinestones or faux flowers (optional)
First find a piece of straight cardboard
You will need a piece of cardboard to cut you initial heart shape out for the center of your DIY twine heart.
The size really depends on your preference and where you would like the DIY twine heart to go in your home.
I chose a smaller piece of cardboard as I would like to hand my twine heart as an ornament, but the possibilities of where you could use your DIY twine heart in your farmhouse decor is endless.
Here is a picture of my cardboard heart cut out and ready to go.
Note: My daughter chose to do a outer shape of a heart instead of a fully filled heart. The shape is completely up to you. It could be a heart, star, circle, letter…….
My next one will probably be a large letter to add to our family room.
Next cut a heart out of your piece of cardboard
Cardboard is awkward to work with. This can make it slightly tricky to get an even cardboard heart.
I recommend making a heart template with a regular piece of paper.
Take a piece of paper fold in half, cut half of a heart(be careful to cut the paper as it will still open leaving part of the fold intact) and open the paper up to reveal your heart template.
Trace heart template on cardboard and cut out cardboard heart with scissors.
next add a loop if desired to your cardboard heart
This is optional but if you would like to hang your DIY twine heart you may want to consider adding a loop to you cardboard heart before wrapping it in twine.
To secure my twine loop for hanging my DIY twine heart later, I placed a small hole in the cardboard towards the middle/top. Then I slide a piece of twine through the whole and tied the twine loop.
Next wrap the entire cardboard heart in twine
Now this is a little trickier then I had imagined. You need to first secure the twine. I did so by adding a dab of hot glue to attach the twine to the cardboard heart. i chose to add it right by the twine loop hole so that the twine loop hole would be covered appropriately.
Then wrap, wrap and wrap the cardboard heart with twine and wrap it some more. Pay attention to how you are wrapping the layers as you want to cover all of the cardboard while still having nice laying twine on the outside of your DIY twine heart.
Secure with a small dab of hot glue. Note: I tucked that little spot of hot glue under another piece of twine to hide it.
Decorate and embellish DIy Twine heart
Of course, I had to bling my DIY twine heart out a little bit.
I added a few rhinestones and a faux pink flower. Completely optional, but I couldn’t resist.
Or leave them simple and charming like my daughters version of just the outer heart shape. I love how her DIY Twine heart turned out at well.
